In Phase 1, well-heads, seen as a health threat due to contamination during rainy season flooding are being improved. The project is a joint-effort, initiated and executed by the local population, managed by Oyani Community Women Integrated Development Group. Outside aid is in the form of strategic consultations respectful of local knowledge and needs, provided by a former Peace Corps volunteer intimately familiar with villagers needs, and who has worked on small scale development projects in his free time for a number of years.

Fistula Foundation logoFistula Foundation

Location:  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Sponsoring Club’s Length of Affiliation:  3 years
Parent Organization:  Fistula Foundation
Website:  www.fistulafoundation.org
Funding Breakdown:  100% Private Donations (Fistula Foundation is a 501c3)

Purpose of the Grant:  A fistula is a hole between a woman's birth passage and one of her internal organs. This hole develops over many days of obstructed labor or a result of sexual violence from being raped or butchered by bayonets, wood or rifles. Obstetric fistula occurs when the pressure of the baby's head against the mother's pelvis cuts off blood supply to tissues in the region. Fistulas result in permanent incontinence of urine and feces. Women are abandoned by their husbands and ostracized by their communities because of their inability to have children and they smell foul. A donation of 4500USD provides ten women with a fistula repair operation, high-quality postoperative care, a new dress, and bus fare home. This procedure restores women with their dignity, hope for their future and a desire to want to live.

Himalasia Mustang logoTsarang Nunnery School Mustang

Location:  Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Sponsoring Club’s Length of Affiliation:  12 Years
Parent Organization:  HimalAsia Foundation
Website:  www.himalasia.org
Funding Breakdown:  70% Private Individuals and Organizations, 30% Governmental or Public Organizations

Purpose for the Grant:  This proposal seeks support for the construction of a building to house an extension school (both Buddhist and secular) in Kathmandu for the Tsarang Nunnery School. Currently there are no facilities for higher education of any kind for girls in the area. With a lack of local options, the only adequate opportunities to continue their studies require moving to India. If the girls conduct their higher education in India, the likelihood of their not returning to Tsarang is statistically very high. This would further impact the already difficult socio-economic conditions faced by the people living in Mustang.

The establishment of a local extension school for higher education for girls is expected to counteract this tendency and make a significant impact on the future of the region by empowering girls and promoting educational parity between boys and girls.

Teachers Without Borders logoTeachers Without Borders South Africa (TWBSA)

Sponsoring Club’s Length of Affiliation:  1-2 Years
Parent Organization:  Teachers Without Borders (International) 501c3
Website:  www.teacherswithoutborders.org
Funding Breakdown:  Teachers receive no stipend, transportation funded by private donations.

Purpose of the Grant:  Teachers Without Borders South Africa (TWBSA) is an organization of volunteer teachers and educators who spend their school holidays in rural South African schools to improve the level of learning and teaching in the fields of mathematics, science and information technology.  The workshops held for the local teachers are particularly inspirational for the women as the inclusion of TWBSA women facilitators in math, science and leadership is designed to discredit stereotype and inspire confidence and growth among women teachers.  This is a greater benefit for the many students attending the schools. Computer labs have also been installed in many schools with the relevant instructions for use and maintenance. Higher education for South African students comes from the impact of their own teachers by TWBSA.

The DG will be used to sponsor the airfare of a woman facilitator and setting up TWBSA computer lab # 8.

Nastenka LogoSpread the Sunshine

Location:  Moscow, Russia
Sponsoring Club’s Length of Affiliation:  7 Years
Parent Organization:  Nastenka Foundation
Website:  contact the American Women's Organization of Moscow
Funding Breakdown:  50% Raffle, Sales of Alphabet Poster, Dictionary and Living in Moscow and 50% Donations

Purpose of the Grant:  Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian national health care system has been struggling to cover the costs of medical care for its needy citizens. Because staffing at the Pediatric Oncology Hospital is at a bare minimum, one parent accompanies the child to perform the basic nursing care. The child receives a disability stipend of $15 - $20 a month, which must be extended to cover food, toiletries, and hygiene materials such as bed pads and diapers for the duration of his stay. The sponsoring club has provided these items for the Pediatric Ward for the past 7 years, through item and petty cash donations. In the past year, donations have not met Spread the Sunshine’s monthly budgeted expenses of 7000 rubles.

The grant will cover this budget for a year.
